It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and you’re at a coffee shop with your laptop open. The inbox you’ve been avoiding for three days somehow clears in twenty minutes. The investor deck outline you kept postponing suddenly takes shape on the page. You make three decisions you’ve been sitting on since the weekend. Nothing about you has changed. The work itself isn’t any easier than it was yesterday. The only thing that’s different is the room you’re in, and the fact that you’re not alone in it.
While walking back home, you ask yourself the same question you’ve asked before: Why does having another person nearby, doing something that has nothing to do with me, makes me productive in a way I can’t be at my own desk?
There’s a name for it. It’s called body doubling, and if you’ve ever found yourself working better next to another person, whether that’s a friend, a colleague, or someone reading quietly at the next table in a library, you’ve already experienced it.
What is body doubling?
Body doubling is the practice of doing your work in the presence of another person, whether physically or virtually, without that person being involved in your task. Their role is simply to be there. You might be drafting a report while they answer emails on their own laptop. You might be working through a pile of invoices while they prepare a presentation. You might be studying for an exam while they read on the other side of the table. What the other person is doing doesn’t matter — what matters is that you are not alone in the room while you work.
The technique was first coined by Linda Anderson, an ADHD coach, in 1996. [1] She described it as a simple arrangement: having another person nearby whose presence helps you stay focused and on task, without that person coaching you, correcting you, or working on the same thing you are.
A coach guides you through a task and gives you feedback. An accountability partner checks in on what you accomplished and often asks about outcomes. A collaborator works with you on the same project. A body double does none of these things. The relationship is intentionally non-evaluative, which is part of what makes it effective.
Why does body doubling work?
Research on body doubling as a named practice is still young, but the practice itself sits on top of several older findings in psychology and neuroscience, and those findings make a coherent case for why working in the presence of another person, physically or virtually, often works better than working alone.
Why our focus improves when someone else is around
In 1898, Norman Triplett observed that competitive cyclists ride faster when racing alongside others than when riding the same distance by themselves. [2] Robert Zajonc, a social psychologist, published a paper in Science in 1965 that formalized the observation. [3] His argument was that the presence of another person increases our level of activation, raising our alertness in a way that sharpens performance on familiar tasks. If the task is something you’ve done before, having someone nearby tends to make you do it more efficiently.
A 1983 meta-analysis of 241 studies confirmed the pattern across a wide range of tasks and settings. [4]
Most of what people use body doubling for falls in the familiar category — sorting email, paying bills, writing a report they’ve written versions of before. The research predicts presence should help, and in practice, it usually does.
Why starting is so hard for people with ADHD
For people with ADHD, getting started on a task isn’t about willpower or motivation. It’s about how the brain itself is wired. The part of the brain that handles decisions about what to do and when, called the prefrontal cortex, relies on a neurotransmitter called dopamine to function effectively. People with ADHD tend to have lower dopamine signaling in the specific brain circuits that cue task initiation. The practical result is that the internal “okay, start now” signal that other people rely on doesn’t fire as reliably. [6]
This is why someone with ADHD can play a video game for four hours without getting up, yet still struggle to open a two-minute email. The video game produces enough dopamine on its own to keep the brain engaged. A boring email doesn’t generate that same stimulation, so the brain never quite gets the signal to begin.
Working alongside another person helps to close that gap. Their presence provides a kind of external cue the ADHD brain can use in place of the internal one it isn’t reliably generating. As one participant in Eagle et al.’s 2024 survey described it: “their presence allows you to borrow some of their energy to initiate and complete your task.” [7]
Why stating the task at the start makes it easier to begin
Most body doubling sessions begin with a small ritual. You tell your partner what you’re going to work on. It may sound like a formality, but behavioral research has consistently found that stating an intention to another person increases the likelihood of following through. [8] Telling someone “I’m going to sort receipts for the next fifty minutes,” right before beginning, makes the task more concrete. It stops being a vague intention and becomes something you’ve committed to out loud.
For a lot of people, especially those who struggle to get started, that small shift is enough to close the gap between intending to start and actually doing it.
Why working alone is harder than we admit
Most of human working history happened in the presence of other people doing other things. The fully isolated worker at a laptop in an empty apartment is a relatively recent arrangement, and a growing body of evidence suggests it comes with costs we didn’t fully anticipate.
The US Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory treated loneliness and isolation as a public health concern, citing effects on productivity, well-being, and physical health. [9] A 2025 review of 65 studies on remote work found the same pattern: isolation is closely associated with lower well-being and reduced engagement with work. [10]
In our research at Focusmate, 99% of members reported that body doubling sessions improved their productivity, 83% of members said sessions helped them feel less lonely, and 82% reported improvements in their well-being and mental health. [5]
Is body doubling only for people with ADHD?
The short answer is no. But ADHD is a big part of the story of how body doubling came to have a name, and that context matters.
When Linda Anderson wrote her 1996 article, she opened with a client named David, a retired VP who had spent years unable to understand why he couldn’t get anything done when working alone. What he told her was this: “If I just have my wife sitting in a chair nearby, I can accomplish more than if I’m alone.” [1]
That was thirty years ago. For decades since, people in ADHD coaching sessions, online forums, and community spaces have used and refined this technique, long before academic researchers started writing about it. The research that’s appeared recently is, in many ways, validating what the community already experienced in practice.
One of the largest peer-reviewed studies on body doubling till date surveyed 220 participants. While most had ADHD, the sample also included people with autism, OCD, depression, anxiety, and sensory processing differences, along with participants who reported no diagnosis at all. The practice held up across groups. [7]
Our internal research at Focusmate shows a similar trend. Members with diagnosed ADHD report a 150% improvement in productivity, and those who identify as neurodivergent more broadly report 161%. Even members who don’t identify as either still report a 128% improvement. [5] The effect is strongest within the ADHD community, but it’s still meaningful for everyone else.
For many remote workers, freelancers, and students, the way they operate has changed. Working alone with a laptop, without external structure, has become the default. A technique developed within the ADHD community has turned out to be broadly useful for anyone whose work happens alone.
How body doubling works in practice
Body doubling isn’t one single format. It exists across a spectrum, and researchers have described it along two dimensions: how close the other person is in space and time (in the same room, on a live video call, or through a recorded video), and how much interaction there is between the two of you (actively talking, quietly present, or entirely one-sided). [7] Different points on that spectrum suit different people and different types of work.
In-person body doubling
You and another person work in the same physical space, each focused on your own tasks, without structured interaction. This could be a partner in the same room while you answer emails, a friend sitting across the table at a cafe, or a colleague who shares a coworking space and doesn’t even know you’re treating them as a body double. This is the format Linda Anderson originally described, and it’s still how a lot of people practice body doubling without naming it.
Virtual body doubling
You and another person work together over video in real time. You might be in different cities or different time zones, but you’re both present on the same call, working quietly in parallel. This is the format Focusmate pioneered in 2016. There’s no live interaction, no one is watching you, and nothing is scheduled. The presence is one-sided, but for some people, it’s enough to recreate the feeling of working alongside someone else.
The right format depends on what’s actually getting in your way. If starting is the hardest part, scheduled live sessions tend to help most, because the commitment creates a clear beginning that’s hard to negotiate around. If your attention comes and goes unpredictably and you can’t always plan ahead, drop-in rooms and recorded videos may work better, since they’re available on demand. There isn’t a single best format — only the one that fits what your brain needs on a given day.
Frequently asked questions about body doubling
Does the body double need to be doing the same task?
No. Most people body double with someone who is working on something completely unrelated. The presence is what matters, not the alignment of tasks.
Is body doubling the same as having an accountability partner?
Not really. There’s some overlap, especially in scheduled sessions where you tell your partner what you’re going to work on at the start and check in at the end. That check-in creates a light layer of accountability, and for some people, that’s part of why it works. The difference is in the depth. An accountability partner typically tracks your progress over time, asks about outcomes, and provides feedback. A body double is there for a single session, not your broader goals. The relationship is intentionally lighter.
Is there a free way to try body doubling?
